Roger de Vlaeminck received the nickname "Le Gitan" (the gypsy) because he came from a family of itinerant tailors, but he earned the name given to him by the public: Mr. Paris-Roubaix. He won the cobbled classic four times in the 1970s, and finished second four times. He started in The Hell of the North on 14 occasions, always finishing in the top 10 except for an abandon in 1980. He is also one of only three riders to win all 5 of cycling's "monuments", and many other races during a long career.
